Binance estimates $6.3B impact; about $3B frozen

Binance has estimated the total impact of its security incident at about $6.3 billion and says approximately $3 billion in affected assets has been frozen on-chain. The figures come from the exchange’s October 30, 2026 update and remain part of an ongoing investigation.

What Binance has announced

The exchange has temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals, revoked the affected address authorization and involved law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners. Binance says losses will be covered using its SAFU fund and company funds, with an updated Proof of Reserves to follow remediation.

Its initial investigation points to a possibly compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, through which an attacker may have accessed a service container and submitted unauthorized withdrawals. Binance says it has found no evidence of leaked wallet private keys. This is a preliminary account, not a completed technical investigation.

From the initial $1.8B freeze to about $3B

On October 29, co-founder Changpeng Zhao said the activity appeared to be a hack. He thanked Tether and Circle for quickly freezing roughly $971 million and $823 million respectively, about $1.8 billion combined. He said he no longer manages Binance.com but expected user funds to be fully covered as a shareholder.

Later reports put the frozen total higher, and Binance’s October 30 update gives approximately $3 billion. The initial $1.8 billion figure therefore describes an earlier stage of the response. Frozen assets have restricted movement; a freeze does not by itself establish that funds have been returned.

What remains unconfirmed

The final loss, complete attack sequence and identity of those responsible remain to be established. Binance has promised a detailed technical report after the investigation. Its assurance that user funds are safe is the company’s statement, not an independent verification of reserves.

If the preliminary scale is confirmed as a theft, the incident could exceed the approximately $1.5 billion stolen from Bybit in February 2025, documented by the FBI. Describing it as the largest confirmed exchange hack before the findings are finalized would be premature.
